Many people who suffer from chronic stomach upset have found that relief is found when they receive acupuncture for Crohn’s disease. “Research published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology finds acupuncture combined with moxibustion effective in the treatment of Crohn’s disease. Subjective and objective findings confirm the results; both laboratory results and patient symptoms demonstrate significant improvements.”
Crohn’s disease causes inflammation of the intestines which affects the GI tract. People who suffer from Crohn’s disease often experience symptoms such as “abdominal bloating and pain, nausea, vomiting, mouth ulcers, weight loss, eye disorders, arthritis, fever, loss of appetite, chronic bloody or watery diarrhea, dermatological disorders, iron deficiency anemia and fatigue.” Aside from the physical symptoms, many times Crohn’s disease causes stress on the body and mind.
Treat Your Autoimmune Disorder: Acupuncture for Crohn’s Disease
“Crohn’s disease is considered an autoimmune system disorder.” While genetics can play a role in this, environmental factors can as well. “Smokers are twice as likely to develop Crohn’s disease than non-smokers. Other risk factors include low exposure to sunlight, obesity, diets high in sugar and saturated fat but low in fruits and vegetables, and urban living.”
While acupuncture has been known to improve digestion, increase cellular turnover and decrease overall stress, research now shows that acupuncture for Crohn’s disease is beneficial. A study published by the World Journal of Gastroenterology showed that a combination of acupuncture and moxibustion was beneficial to those suffering from Crohn’s. “The study was randomized, blinded and used control groups to rule out the placebo effect.” Three times a week for twelve weeks acupuncture and moxibustion were applied and they found that “the total treatment efficacy rate for acupuncture combined with moxibustion was 83.72%.” After the course of treatment “Histopathological scores significantly improved and symptoms significantly reduced.” Instances of anemia, bowel inflammation, and both “CRP (C-reactive protein) and ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate) levels” were reduced. Lab results showed that “acupuncture effectively controls the inflammatory response and eases intestinal inflammation.”
