Acupuncture for Pain Management – New FDA Proposal

Acupuncture for Pain Management - New FDA Proposal | Strength & Vitality Wellness CenterMany people seek acupuncture for pain management and now the Food and Drug administration are supporting that notion. “The Food and Drug Administration released proposed changes Wednesday to its blueprint on educating health care providers about treating pain. The guidelines now recommend that doctors get information about chiropractic care and acupuncture as therapies that might help patients avoid prescription opioids.” With the opioid epidemic being at an all-time high, alternative treatments such as acupuncture for pain management may help curb over prescribing.

Acupuncture for Pain Management Versus Traditional Treatments

While “the FDA required opioid manufacturers to provide education for health providers who prescribe their pain medications” this didn’t include alternative therapies such as acupuncture. It is important that health care providers understand the range of helpful alternative therapies. These therapies, such as acupuncture for pain, can be used in conjunction with allopathic treatment. Together the two modalities may make pain manageable without the use of opioids.

The suggested changes proposed by the FDA come as acupuncturists and other alternative treatment providers “have stepped up lobbying Congress and state legislatures to elevate their role in treating chronic pain. They’ve scored several big victories in recent years.” “earlier this year, the chiropractic industry cheered when the American College of Physicians recommended non-surgical treatments such as acupuncture, yoga, and chiropractic care as the first options for treating lower back pain.”

Through July 10, the FDA will take public comments so that “drug makers, doctors, and alternative medicine providers will all have a chance to weigh in.” With the public health in the forefront of the opioid crisis, the FDA is making strides at uncovering alternative therapies to prevent addiction.
