Many of us begin to set New Year’s resolutions around this time of year. We promise that we’ll keep them, promise that we’ll be healthy, happy, successful. It almost feels as if as quick as it takes us to create our New Year’s resolutions we break them. The problem is that we’re setting ourselves up for failure.
New Year’s Resolutions the Attainable Way
Promising yourself that you’ll get fit in 2017 is one thing, but joining an exercise boot camp might not be a good first step. This is not to say that jumping into a new exercise program is a bad idea, but setting extremely high expectations for yourself sets you up for failure. If you go from no exercise to expecting that you’ll be the next triathlete in your family you might be setting the bar too high. Working up to your goals, step by step, will allow you to set an attainable New Year’s resolution.
How can you make a resolution and keep it? The first step is to take some time to look back on the past year (or two) and see what worked and what didn’t. Did you start a fad diet only to binge on a whole pack of cookies 2 weeks later? Did you begin a gratitude journal that went silent in February? Think through goals that may have had a hard time achieving in the past few years and begin to question “why?” Many times the answer is that we just expect too much out of ourselves.
